Where Borneo is and why kratom grows here
Borneo is the world's third-largest island; most of it is the Indonesian Kalimantan. The humid equatorial climate, rainforests and branching river lowlands are the natural home of the Mitragyna speciosa tree (where kratom grows), which grows here both wild and on plantations and, thanks to the warmth, is harvested year-round. The country's role in production today is covered in Indonesia as a kratom supplier.
Why most kratom is grown here today
Kratom's historical home is southern Thailand, but it was banned there for decades (1943-2021), so the centre of cultivation and export shifted to Indonesia, chiefly to Kalimantan (Kratom in Thailand). Most of both the global and our own range now comes from here - where exactly a given batch is from is stated with the product.
Which of our strains come from Borneo
The Borneo origin is shared, but the strains differ in the leaf-selection principle. Maeng Da is a grade selection of more mature leaf (we carry it green, white and red, and as the only extract). Elephant is a selection by leaf size, carried in white. Rurut is a local name from West Kalimantan and the only nano grind in the range. Regional strains from elsewhere - Sumatra and Thai kratom - are not from Borneo.
What is in the leaf and what the report says
Borneo leaf is still Mitragyna speciosa, a tree of the coffee family (Rubiaceae), a botanical relative of coffee. It holds more than forty alkaloids; the main one is mitragynine, alongside smaller amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine, speciogynine and paynantheine. The origin on its own does not set how much of them a powder holds - that is measured by the accredited VŠCHT Prague laboratory for every batch by HPLC, along with purity, microbiology and heavy metals (how to read a COA). A seller may not state effects; the only wording about them is the mandatory information on the pack.
