About the Maeng Da designation

Maeng Da (MD for short; Green, White and Red Maeng Da in product names) is not a region or a botanical strain but a trade grade - a selection of more mature, darker Mitragyna speciosa leaf. The term comes from Thai and, in the kratom trade, means roughly "top grade".

The designation itself sets neither the colour nor the chemistry. The same selected leaf is processed into a green, white or red variety depending on harvest stage and drying, and the actual alkaloid content follows the specific batch and its COA, not the name on the pack.

It is written in several ways (MD, "maengda", Maeng-Da), but it is always the same designation. Today it mostly refers to leaf grown on Borneo (Kalimantan) in Indonesia, which is where our batches come from.

THE PLANT AND ITS COMPOSITION

The plant behind the name and its alkaloids

Whatever trade name the leaf carries, it is still the same species and the same group of alkaloids.

Mitragyna speciosa

An evergreen tropical tree of the coffee family (Rubiaceae), a botanical relative of coffee. A grade in the name does not change the species - it is the same for Maeng Da as for every other kratom strain.

Where it grows

In the wild it reaches up to 25 m in the humid equatorial forests and river lowlands of Southeast Asia. The warm climate lets the leaf be harvested from the same trees year-round.

More than forty alkaloids

The main one is mitragynine, alongside smaller amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine, speciogynine and paynantheine. Their ratio is shifted by leaf maturity and drying, not by the trade name.

How much - the COA tells you

The actual alkaloid content differs from batch to batch and is measured by the laboratory. You find it in the COA with the product - it does not follow from the name or the vein colour.

AMONG THE STRAINS

How the strains are named: region, grade, leaf size, grind

The strain names in our range work on different principles - by region, grade selection, leaf size or grind.

Each name in the catalogue tells you something different. Sumatra and Thai kratom are named after the growing region; Elephant (White Elephant) after its noticeably large leaves; Rurut stands out by its grind to a nano fraction below 50 μm. Maeng Da, by contrast, is a grade designation - a selection of more mature leaf that can be processed in any of those ways.

That is exactly why it is the only strain we carry in all three vein colours (green, white, red) and also as an extract - it is tied to no single region or form. But whichever name you pick, it does not set the alkaloid content: that is different for every batch and is given in its COA - the values are compared in the table below.

USAGE RECOMMENDATIONS

What to keep in mind when using it

Practical recommendations based on the instructions for use on the packaging and on the psychomodulatory substances act.

  1. Follow the instructions for use on the packaging

According to the instructions, the recommended single serving is 3 g of powder and the maximum daily amount is 10 g. The product should not be used every day - there should be a 3-day break between uses. These rules apply equally to every colour.

  2. Weigh, do not guess

Alkaloid content changes from batch to batch, so always measure the dose on a scale with 0.1 g resolution rather than "by the spoon". The same weighed amount can hold different quantities of alkaloids across batches - the exact figure is in the COA.

  3. The daily limit applies to all products combined

The green, white and red varieties are three batches of one designation. If you alternate between them, count the total amount of kratom per day - the 10 g limit is not counted separately for each product.

  4. The extract is not powder

The 10 ml extract has a mitragynine concentration an order of magnitude higher than the powder. Follow only the instructions of the specific product and never convert grams of powder to drops or vice versa.

  5. When not to use the product

Not before driving or activities requiring attention (at least 8 hours), not in combination with alcohol, medicines or other psychoactive substances, not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are unsure whether the product is suitable for you, consult a doctor.

  6. Store in a closed pouch

Finely ground powder absorbs moisture easily. Close the pouch after every use and keep it dry, dark and at room temperature, out of reach of persons under 18. The shelf life of the batch is printed on the packaging.

MAENG DA · COMPLETE INFORMATION

Everything about the Maeng Da designation: name, origin, processing and the law

What the name Maeng Da means and where it comes from

The expression maeng da comes from Thai and in trade slang came to mean "top grade". In the kratom trade it works as a grade designation for the leaf, not as the name of a botanical variety. It is said to have originated in Thailand for leaf from selected, taller trees; during the Thai kratom ban (1943-2021), however, growing and processing moved to Indonesia, where the name is used to this day. Read more about the Thai history of kratom in the article Kratom in Thailand.

How this leaf is grown and processed on Borneo

Our batches come from Borneo (Kalimantan) in Indonesia, today the world's main producer of kratom (Indonesia as a kratom supplier). For this designation, more mature, darker leaves are selected; after picking, the stems and central veins are removed. Drying follows - its length, exposure to light and any short fermentation determine the final colour (see fermentation of kratom leaf). The dried leaf is then ground into a fine powder of roughly 80 mesh (granulometry of kratom powder).

Green, White and Red: one designation, three colours

All three colours are the same Maeng Da designation; they differ in harvest stage and drying method, which determine the colour of the central leaf vein (kratom vein colours). The green variety (Green Maeng Da) is dried the standard way and is usually considered the baseline; white (White Maeng Da) comes from younger leaf and longer drying without direct sun; red (Red Maeng Da) from more mature leaf with longer drying or a short fermentation. Differences in mitragynine content between the colours are, in our reports, in the order of tenths of a percent and change with every batch - so choose the colour by the COA of the specific batch, not by the name. Other strains of the same colour are on the green, white and red kratom pages.

Extract and powder

The 10 ml kratom extract in our range is made from the green variety by water extraction and reduction; the result is a concentrate with a mitragynine content an order of magnitude (roughly ten times) higher than the powder. The extract and the powder are therefore not interchangeable, and each has its own instructions for use. The technology and the differences are described in the article Kratom extract vs. powder; all concentrates are in the extract category.

How we verify every batch

Every batch of the green, white and red varieties and of the extract has its own certificate of analysis (COA) from the accredited VŠCHT Prague laboratory. HPLC determines the content of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, along with purity, microbiology and heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Hg, As) against the limits for psychomodulatory substances. A batch without a report is not put on sale. Current values are in the table above and in the full report with each product; how to read a report is explained in the guide COA for kratom, and an overview of all batches is on the Lab tests page.

"Strongest kratom"? Why we do not describe effects

Searches such as "kratom for energy", "kratom for focus" or "strongest kratom" are among the most common. You will deliberately not find an answer to them here: the psychomodulatory substances act prohibits claims about effects on the product. The only wording about effects we may use is the mandatory consumer information on the packaging: "At the recommended dosage this product has stimulating effects. When the recommended dosage is exceeded, this product has sedative effects." - always together with the risk warnings. "Strength", moreover, is not a property of the name but of the specific batch: in our reports Maeng Da batches sit in the upper part of the mitragynine range among powders, but that is a single batch's value in the COA, it changes with every batch and says nothing about effects. So compare the figures in the COA, not the labels - whoever promises you an effect is breaking the law and probably not testing batches. What the law and science say about effects is summarised in Kratom effects: what we may say.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

On the name, origin, colours and the lab. If you cannot find an answer, write to our support.

MD, "maengda", Maeng-Da - are they the same?

Yes. They are just different spellings of one trade designation for selected, "top grade" leaf. It is not a botanical variety - it is still Mitragyna speciosa. Today the name mostly refers to kratom from Indonesian Borneo.

What is the difference between the green, white and red varieties?

The same designation, but a different harvest stage and drying method, which determine the colour of the central vein. Each colour has its own batch and its own lab report with us; differences in mitragynine content are in the order of tenths of a percent and vary from batch to batch.

Is Maeng Da the strongest kratom?

"Strength" is not a property of the name but of a specific batch - it is measured by the mitragynine content in the COA. Our batches sit in the upper part of the range among powders, yet the differences from other strains are in tenths of a percent. Claims about the strength of effects are prohibited by law; compare the figures in the table above.

How is it dosed correctly?

According to the instructions on the packaging: 3 g of powder per serving, at most 10 g per day, with a 3-day break between uses. The 10 ml extract has its own instructions and is not interchangeable with the powder. Always weigh the amount on a scale - why and how is explained in Kratom dosing according to the instructions.

Is Maeng Da legal in Czechia, and is age verification required?

Since 2026 kratom is a psychomodulatory substance under Act No. 167/1998 Coll.: it may only be sold by a seller licensed by the Ministry of Health and exclusively to persons over 18. Age verification is mandatory both in the shop and online. Vivadzen holds this licence - details on the Licence and Age verification pages.

Which forms and pack sizes do you offer?

As a finely ground powder in 25 g or 50 g pouches (available sizes are shown with the product) and as an extract in a 10 ml bottle, in Green, White and Red variants. Current availability is shown with each product; in-person collection at our two Prague shops, delivery across the Czech Republic.
