STRAIN · SUMATRA
Sumatra kratom
A strain named after its place of origin - an island in western Indonesia. We carry it as a single green variety, finely ground, with a VŠCHT Prague report for every batch.
- Island of Sumatra Western Indonesia, on the equator
- Green processing Medium maturity, drying without fermentation
- One strain, one report Batch tested at VŠCHT Prague
About the Sumatra strain
Sumatra is one of the few kratom strains whose name points directly to the place of origin: the sixth-largest island in the world, in western Indonesia, where the leaf comes from. Designations like Maeng Da speak of leaf selection; "Sumatra" speaks of a region.
In our range it is a single product - the green variety, finely ground: a single-strain batch with its own report from VŠCHT Prague, whose values are in the table and with the product.

THE LEAF'S JOURNEY
From a Sumatran plantation to your pack
Six steps between a leaf on the tree and a pouch with a report.
-
Step 1
Growing on Sumatra
The trees grow on plantations and in lowland forests in a humid equatorial climate. The leaf is harvested repeatedly from the same trees; it regrows within a few weeks.
-
Step 2
Harvest at medium maturity
For the green variety, leaves are picked that are no longer young but have not yet matured to the stage typical of red processing. Stems and central veins are removed by hand.
-
Step 3
Standard drying without fermentation
The leaves dry in the shade or in drying rooms, without prolonged fermentation (<a href="/pruvodce/botanika-a-veda/fermentace-kratomu">about fermentation</a>) - this is exactly what sets the green variety apart from the red. Air humidity and drying time are why individual batches differ slightly.
-
Step 4
Fine grind
The dried leaf is ground to roughly 80 mesh (<a href="/pruvodce/botanika-a-veda/mesh-velikost-kratomu">about the grind</a>). Ours is a finely ground powder without nano processing; nano grinding is found in the Rurut strain.
-
Step 5
VŠCHT Prague laboratory
Every batch receives a report: mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, purity, microbiology, heavy metals. No batch is sold without a report.
-
Step 6
Packaging and labelling
The powder is filled into 25 g or 50 g resealable pouches with the mandatory psychomodulatory-substance designation, batch number and instructions for use.

THE PLANT, THE ISLAND AND THE COMPOSITION
Sumatra kratom: the plant, the island and the leaf composition
What the plant is
Mitragyna speciosa is an evergreen tropical tree of the coffee family (Rubiaceae), a botanical relative of coffee; in the wild it grows up to 25 m in the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia (where kratom grows). Kratom under any name is the leaf of this one species; "Sumatra" only says which part of its range the leaf came from.
The island and its conditions
Sumatra lies right on the equator: a humid equatorial climate, volcanic soils and river lowlands are the natural habitat of Mitragyna speciosa. Unlike Kalimantan on Borneo, where most of the world's production comes from (including our Maeng Da), Sumatran production is smaller and concentrated in a few areas. We write about the country's role in Indonesia as a kratom supplier.
Alkaloids and what the analysis shows
The kratom leaf holds more than forty alkaloids; the main one is mitragynine, alongside smaller amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine, speciogynine and paynantheine. Green processing (without prolonged fermentation) shifts that set less than the longest drying does. But how much of them a given batch holds is set not by the name or the colour but by the batch itself: the accredited VŠCHT Prague laboratory measures mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine by HPLC (how to read a COA). So for our Sumatra the number in the report is the number in the pouch.
Green Sumatra and green Maeng Da
The most frequent question when choosing. Both are green, both finely ground, both from Indonesia; they differ in origin (the island of Sumatra versus Borneo) and in leaf selection: green Maeng Da is a selection of more mature leaf. In the lab reports it is a matter of tenths of a percent of mitragynine; compare the rows in the table below. Which of the two is "milder" or "stronger" is not something the law allows us to state, and the data show no such difference (about kratom effects).
Instructions, packs and buying
The same instructions apply as for every powder of ours: 3 g per serving, at most 10 g per day, a 3-day break between uses, always weigh the dose (dosing according to the instructions). Packs of 25 g and 50 g in a resealable pouch. Like any kratom, this strain is a psychomodulatory substance: sold only with a Ministry of Health licence, to persons over 18, in packs up to 50 g. Our permit is on the Licence page, and you can buy it at our two shops in Prague or in the e-shop with delivery across the Czech Republic (delivery and payment). Safety information is with the product and in Kratom risks and safety.

WHAT THE STRAIN IS NAMED AFTER
Region, selection, leaf size, grind: how the names differ
What the strain is named after, which colours and forms we carry and what the reports show.
In our range the strains differ mainly in what they are named after. Sumatra and Thai kratom carry the name of a region; Maeng Da is a leaf-selection designation grown today mainly on Borneo; Elephant is named after its leaf size and Rurut after its nano grind. We carry this strain in one colour and one batch, which is why its row in the table below is the simplest - it shows clearly that alkaloid content is decided by the COA value, not the name.
| Strain | Origin | Vein colours | Forms | Mitragynine (COA) | Grind | In stock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maeng Da | Borneo, Indonesia | Red Green White | Powder, Extract | 1,38 - 1,55 % extract 12 % | finely ground, water extract | 4 products |
| Sumatra you are here | Sumatra, Indonesia | Green | Powder | 1,32 % | finely ground | 1 product |
| Thai | Southern Thailand | Green | Powder | 1,28 % | finely ground | 1 product |
| Elephant | Borneo, Indonesia | White | Powder | 1,49 % | finely ground | 1 product |
| Borneo | Borneo (Kalimantan), Indonesia | - | - | - | - | Coming soon |
| Rurut | Borneo, Indonesia | Green | Nano | 1,46 % | nano (≤ 50 μm) | 1 product |
Mitragynin values are ranges from the COA of current batches (VŠCHT Praha) and change with every batch. You'll find exact values with each product.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What people ask most
Short answers; details are in the guide.
Green Sumatra, Sumatra Green - are they the same thing?
Yes. They are different spellings of one and the same thing: the green variety of leaf from the island of Sumatra. Word order and language change from site to site, but one origin and one processing stand behind every name.
Is there a red or white variety?
Yes, leaf from Sumatra also comes in red and white varieties - the same island, but different processing (kratom vein colours). We carry the green one; any other colour would be a separate batch with its own report.
Why is there only one batch of this strain?
Because we carry one colour and one product. It is a single-strain batch: not a blend or an average of several harvests, but one leaf with one report.
Where can I see this batch's values?
The current values are in the table above and with the product; the batch number is printed on the pack, so the COA figures are easy to check. A new batch updates the table automatically.
How should the powder be stored?
In the closed pack, in a dry, dark place at room temperature, out of reach of persons under 18. Finely ground leaf readily absorbs moisture, so close the pouch after every use (storing kratom).
